Glass holes overflow
« on: January 17, 2012, 22:43:18 »
Ok, I'm sure everyone is tired of me saying this but I am still looking at setups to purchase.  I want a reef ready tank.  But if I can't and find a good deal I would be interested in drilling it.  I have good things about using "Glass Holes" overflows.  Anyone have any experience with these.  Are they as easy to install as it sounds?
Thanks and God Bless,
John

Inexpensive, easy to do, adjustable height, dead silent, smaller in tank foot print. Simply 1.5" PVC, Strainer, Gate Valve and Bulkhead. Second 1" one behind it for backup. Everything except bulkhead can be found at local hardware store.

That would open up so many more options as long as it is that easy!
I have decided after messing with overflow tubes and bubbles for several years I have decided NO MORE!
Thanks and God Bless,

In this thread there are some pictures of the overflow that I built http://www.beananimal.com/projects/silent-and-fail-safe-aquarium-overflow-system.aspx .  I used the club's holesaws to drill the holes.

I scaled it down and didn't use as big of pipes as recommended as it is only a 46g bowfront.

It is dead silent, floodproof, and the skimming action is amazing.

I used a kit from glassholes.com. Very happy with it. Virtually invisible in the tank. Easy to install as long as you are comfortable drilling the glass.

I'm going back to my 75 and it is currently not drilled.  I plan on drilling it as I don't want to have to deal with an overflow box again.  What size plumbing should be used for a 75 with an Iwaki MD-20RXT Pump (540 GPH).

Also, how close (in inches) can I drill holes in the back?  I want to be able to "hide" the fittings from front view for the overflow with the bottom of my canopy.
