My new little Eco-system :)
« on: January 31, 2009, 16:31:08 »
Hey All ! Just wanted to start posting a few pics of my attempt to go from a Fish Only tank (yes i do use live rock in that tank as well, but only as a bio medium ) to a mini reef.

This is Day 1 on Dec. 24 2008 (above)

This is a badly out of focus side shot. After a little more than a month and a few trips to Aquariums Ect. (BIG PLUG !) ( I have yet to me you Joel )

The first fish I plan to add will be a Yellow Clown Goby. Anyone have any exp with these little guys? I must admit though, that I am becoming quit inthralled with the Zoanthids.

Clown gobies are cool, but they will eat small shrimp & can irritate (if not eat) SPS corals.

I have a yellow clown goby at my parents house with their tank. Very cool little fish and very easy to keep.
If you didn't know I'm kind of a big deal...

I have some green clown gobies.  I like them because they remind me of the Ultimate Warrior from when I was growing up.  One of which hosts my biggest acro in the tank.  I have always heard that they are known for eating polyps off of acro's, but I have also heard that they eat anything that may land in the crevices of the acro.  So far, though only a couple weeks, my acro isn't missing any polyps when the goby lives.  He is sweet there though cause he is good sized and he just pops out in between the branches.

Worthwhile plug: I got my gobies from Joel.  They are great!  Biggest I have seen at a LFS!!  Props to Joel! ;D

Re: My new little Eco-system :) Tank Update 7/29/2009
« Reply #4 on: July 29, 2009, 17:31:45 »
Just though I would update a little

a little while back due to a crack in the 10g tank I was forced  ;D to upgrade to a 26g bowfront. I was fortunate that the 10g had been preforming great.
I added more live rock (still not done, but I am being picky about the rock).
I got bored and made a little in-tank refugium.
Added a Hydor Koralia 1 Circulation Pump as well as upgrading the lighting to a Current USA 65W SmartPaq Compact Fluorescent (half 460nm Actinic, half 10K).
also I have added a AquaticLife Internal Mini Protein Skimmer 115. I will let you know how this skimmer works out after I see it running for a month more. As of now I am real happy with it.

I am thinking of adding another Current USA 65W SmartPaq Compact Fluorescent with 420nm tube to increase my blues as they seem a little washed out.

My bio load is:

1 gold stripe maroon clown (very small 1.5")
1 royal gramma (1.5")
6 Blue leg hermit
2 red leg hermit
1 ball sponge
2 zoa
1 new torch coral
1 new frogspawn

that's it for now  :cya

Thank you for the nice comments however I hope it looks a little better now.

Before: this is the NEW 26g just after setup. Sometime in mid July

It came with a new Aqueon 30 filter (worked great to filter out the new sand particles clouding the water :)  ). I must admit, it is one of the best HOB filters I have used in a while. After this picture it was put to use on the wifes fresh water tank.

After a trip to Joels big "Moving the Business Sale" :)  I decided it was time to add a little aquascaping to my sparse setup. After hours of drilling, gluing and cutting acrylic rods, this is now what I have ended up with:

I know its all bright white and everything, But I am sure time will correct that problem

OK....here are a few other pic I just wanted to throw in...

What a great job aqua-scaping. It is hard to believe that is the same tank. Looks like a real reef.  Did you get any pictures you can share of the glass rod and gluing process?

Thanks ! and no I didnt get any pics with this one because I thought about it too late  :'( and since this was my second attempt at anything like this ( my first is the little structure in the first pic) I was afraid it would explode / disintegrate or something.

The funny part is, most of the work went into the structure on the bottom that is covered with sand. I created a lattice support structure where sand could fill up all the many voids. That way my little pistol shrimp could tunnel to his little content and not topple the whole thing  ;D.

I also designed it so I could leave my existing rock work (what little there was) in place behind the new stuff.

And after all of that, I can still clean 360 degrees with my mag float with out hitting any live rock !!

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.

So far so good. We've added a few things so I thought I would try to keep this thread up to date.

First up is the newly purchased Court Jester Goby. They are also know as the Rainfords Goby I have been told. However since my call sign on all the game boards has been Jester for many years, I am sticking with the former name  ;D

For anyone wanting info on where I got this great little fish please use this link : http://www.ohioreef.com/index.php?topic=6944.0

Pic Update

Just wanted to keep this updated with a few pics.

I have made a few trips to various sponsors and members over the past few weeks. I have tried to make at least 1 purchase from all of our sponcers.

The ric pics that you see below are of the 3 ricordias that I purchased from Marine Solutions. GREAT place and close :) I am now thinking of picking up a HOB Skimmer from them.

Coral ranch and Lazylivin provided most of the zoas pictured. Coral ranch .... what can I say.... probably the most dangerous place I can go with my wallet

Coral Ranch also provided the Sun Coral

-----------------------------------------------------------

MICRO ZOAS

This red mushroom was my first coral given to me by Reef'd Up (THANKS SO MUCH)

OK...done for now
