Hey i resemble that remark

I actually did that last year. I only had 5 channels though (simple parallel port interface). This year i actually built two 24 channel controllers, but didn't have time to set it up.  I finished soldering up the controllers and hanging the lights, but didn't get the control wires ran or songs programmed.  :'(  I'll have to get on it earlyer next year.  I always buy about 20 strings of lights day after xmas when they are 75% off.

Look for my video next year  ;)  all the info you could want on the DoItYourselfChristmas.com forums.

BTW those 2 vids you posted are probalby running about 1000 channels.  that little tree has about 30 ch on its own. for reference, a populated 24 channel controller will run you >$75

Electrical Engineers do it on impulse, with faster rise times, with more power, and less resistance at higher frequencies, without shorts, until it Hertz

Download vixenlights.com it's the standard open source program to light control. The "commerical" ones are huge rip off. And 5 hours of programming is an understatment. I'm sure some of those 1000ch setups have 40+ hours on just prpgramming. I'll post some links when I get back to the laptop

This thread is an example of why I try really hard to stay away from youtube. A link for Christmas lights turns into a 6 hour adventure and I end up watching squirrels getting launched by homemade catapults.

We actually have a neighbor up the street on the closest main road (Whipp Rd. if you're near Centerville) who did that this year (set to Joy to the World I think...)

Launching squirrels out of catapults would be such a cool game if someone stood out to catch them.

Man, I put up a few thousand lights this year, even won my neighborhood lighting/ christmas decoration contest. But what I put up looks like crap compared to those guy in the videos. I'm going to have to start working on itearlier next year. The biggest problem I'm having this year is the stupid squirrels keep chewing my wires in half. I have fixed chewed wires twice in the last week. I even just left them all turned on all day long thinking that it would shock a squirrel if they tried it again...last night I noticed a section not working again....stupid squirrels!!!!

The other problem is I don't have enough available electricity but I have come up with a plan to resolve that for next year. I also found a place that sells the heavy duty commercial grade LED lights at a reasonable price. They draw so little electricity that you can put many strands of lights together, I think it was over 100 strands of 100 lights could be strung together. That's going to make is easier compared to only being able to run 3 to 5 strands together with what I have now.

Just something else to waste time and money on ;D

Joel,

Could you PM me with the source for the LEDs? My son wants to try putting something together for next year.

Maybe we should have a DIYC light controller assembly how-to at one of our meetings. :D
